What a brilliant performance at the Fleadh. I saw the original line-up 4x and Saturday sounded just as good as ever and Paul was great. I travelled from Leeds and wouldn't have missed it for anything - even if I had to wear a very unflattering 20-year-old, signed T-shirt and embarrassed myself jumping around after saying I wouldn't - Hi to anyone who may have had the misfortune of seeing me! Billy, please come to England again as I'm disappointed I couldn't make it to the Friday gig to say hello. (ps. Damian - don't worry, you still look Ok to me, although amongst my collection of old Nmes etc I unearthed a rather embarrassing article in a teen magazine dated July '79 - you can pay me to destroy it if you wish!). Simon Ward @ on 05:01 11th-Jan-00 GMT #87d-151 The setlist from the Mean Fiddler (taken from Damien's keyboard): You've Got My Number Family Entertainment Here Comes The Summer Jimmy Jimmy Girls That Don't Talk She's a Runaround It's Going To Happen Male Model Julie Ocean Wednesday Week There Goes Norman My Perfect Cousin Girls Don't Like It Billy's Third Lets Talk About Girls Teenage Kicks Gotta Getta When Saturday Comes True Confessions Get Over You Encores from memory and I'm not sure about the order: Encore 1 More Songs About Chocolate And Girls Mars Bars I Can Only Give You Everything (them) Really Really Encore 2 You've Got My Number Teenage Kicks The Undertones tribute band is. The Undertones. How ironic. How appropriate. I would have liked to have something from the 'difficult later years', especially Bitter Sweet, but other than that it was just about perfect. More Songs About Chocolate And Girls has never sounded so good - the essence of Undertone-osity. Cliff on 05:01 11th-Jan-00 GMT #87d-152 Regarding the Fiddler set,'you're Welcome' was also in there. Rick @ on 05:01 11th-Jan-00 GMT #87d-153 I can now officially retire from gig going (see my e-mail below) having seen the greatest band of all time two last times. The Mean Fiddler gig was amazing - hearing Family Entertainment (my fave song of all time) come up second I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Set was bit too biased towards the first album but who's complaining. New singer was good (my mate an interested bystander said he was better than Feargal - sorry but that's blasphemy). Couldn't believe all the energy us aging punks have still got and, believe me, I've been to many recent gigs where the indie kids leap for about a minute then stop. Interesting to see Mickey taking over from Feargal for inter-song banter and has Sean O'neil ever smiled at Any Undertones gig. Damian looks the same as the last time I saw him in 1987 with That Petrol Emotion. The Fleadh was good but didn't like the shorter set (what happened to the extra 10 minutes scheduled in the programme?). The stunned, and in one case crying, Corrs fans picknicking down the front when around 60 'tones fans went mental was the highlight of the day. Good of those Corrs fans to provide a cushion to bounce and slam dance off along the barrier at the front though. Did anyone get the impression the band weren't so happy at the response at the Fleadh (over to Billy D. for a response)? Anyway thanks to all fans I spoke to and got bruised and battered by and the band themselves for providing a fitting end and wonderful atmosphere for me. My pipe and slippers now beckon. Billy Doherty (drummer The Undertones) on 05:01 11th-Jan-00 GMT #87d-154 Rick - I thought we played well at the Fleadh. Your observations were quite correct - we were uncertain on the crowds reaction. It wasn't that weren't happy with the response more the scale and the unfamiliarity with playing at such a big event after almost 17 years. John does smile (now and again). He is to busy concentrating like the rest of us - afraid of making mistakes - which we all did. Delighted you enjoyed the shows. Billy. Mark @ on 05:01 11th-Jan-00 GMT #87d-155 This is for Billy. It was a great pleasure to meet you on both Friday & Saturday. Both myself and Steve spoke to you at the Fleadh while the Corrs were playing. Having been a been a fan since hearing 'jimmy Jimmy' in 1979, I was never able to see The Undertones live until Friday, it was fantastic. Anyway a very heartfelt thanks and long may it continue! Good Luck. Mark. hugh on 05:01 11th-Jan-00 GMT #87d-156 Thanks, lads for a great time on Friday night and a special thanks Mickey for getting me on the list. I lost a credit card, a camera and I think my marriage is over. Great to chat to Billy and Helena-hopefully I'll be a little less 'emotional' next time. A word of advice-stay out of the moshpit at 40. Either I've broken a rib or I'm having a heart attack. Worth it? Course it was. Hope to see you soon. Hugh Trevor on 05:01 11th-Jan-00 GMT #87d-157 Mean Fiddler gig was one of the best I've ever attended in my life - shame there was no "jump Boys" or "whats With Terry" but what the hell! The Undertones are truly as good as it gets. Good luck guys. Simon Ward @ on 05:01 11th-Jan-00 GMT #87d-158 What we really need is a live album - any rumours? Simon Ward on 05:01 11th-Jan-00 GMT #87d-159 Phil Deer Wrote a poor chap next to me at The Mean Fiddler lost his glasses in the mosh pit. maybe this was (what's with) Terry? Yep that was me ! Some kind chappy found them for me (a bit bet up) - I did think what the hell it's been a brilliant night - Billy any chance of another London gig ? Nice banner by the way - would have looked nice on the bedroom wall - Yep - that was me too ! Cliff on ? GMT #87d-160 Hey Simon, was that you trying to nick my banner? And I thought the person who lost his glasses was me,unfortunately mine were lost forever. Phil Deere @ on ? GMT #87d-161 A live album? now wouldn't that just complete our lives. A friend of mine who used to work at a company called Windsong who did a lot of those old Radio 1 `inconcert` albums (and kindly smuggled out a copy of the cassette for me), said that they were going to put out the April 1980 show. However one band member wouldn't give his permission. can't think who that might be, but he wasn't at The Mean Fiddler on Friday. Luke @ on ? GMT #87d-162 Brilliant weekend, even if I suffered for a few days afterwards; Corrs fans made it for me - did anyone else see the look of sheer fear on the faces of the two Japanese tourists? Class. Think I was probably the only sub-30 person there who saw the band "first time round". ©® on ? GMT #87d-163 Hey I'll tell you one thing that struck me about last weekend . . . . what a difference the internet's made getting us lot in contact. . . . and how cool it would have been to have the 'net 20 years ago. The kids today should stop complaining cos their Life's Too Easy, they got the www, multi channel Tv, digital versatile technology. . . . oh yeah and I almost forgot, $hite music with ne'er a Les Paul, Telecaster or Precision to be found! Ok, maybe things weren’t so bad in them days . . . . . :-) Cliff @ on ? GMT #87d-164 Anything live from the New Undertones would be superb, maybe a compillation of several of the gigs.on another subject, I'm making enquiries regarding flights to Dublin next week so is anybody interested? We all know it's a botty Vent ing place to go for the weekend and unlike Fleadh there are some decent bands on.personally I'd probably go on Friday and come back Sunday morning,so thats 2 good nights out and the 'tones play on Saturday.let me know anyone.
