I havent had the joy of hearing Liz Kershaws Teenage Kicks but the cover of it that annoyed me most was Skunk Anansie's version on some hit awards programme on the telly - truly awful. they are not scary at all just silly. Adrian on ? GMT #87d-376 The first time I saw The 'Tones,The Photo's were supporting I seem to remember all the blokes fighting for a spot right in front of Wendy Wu and then standing and drooling! I bought their first(only?)album,I seem to remember it had a couple of great tunes on it,Irene and Barberellas spring to mind. Julius on ? GMT #87d-377 As I still have all my Undertones-records on the floor I am struck by the fact that there is a resemblance between my 60min and the compilationCD on Castle Comm (teenage kicks, the best of). Talking about Clare Grogan(George did), she starred in the best movie ever made: Gregory's Girl. A film which really expresses the feeling of a summernight with romance in the air. Never saw a movie which captured that "nice hot summernightfeeling" so good phil on ? GMT #87d-378 ok since we're talking about dubious cover versions of tones songs....has anyone heard the version of "you've got my number" by Dr Feelgood?..on the album Brilleaux..Feelgood were one of my favourite bands and I have mixed feelings about this track..whilst it is a great chugging r'n'b track it has lost some of the energy of the original..replies on a postcard please.. George on ? GMT #87d-379 Another track for the new Tones LP of previously unreleased songs, played at concerts, would be Cher O'Bowlies. I know a compilation LP was issued with this name 'featuring Feargal Sharkey', but the track is not on it. If not an LP then at least an EP if such a thing still exists with a bonus EP included. Donald on ? GMT #87d-380 Like the EP idea,George. How about some Xmas concerts, with video and EP release to coincide? Hope Billy (drummer the undertones)is reading this? Julius - Greogory's Girl is a great film, its even makes Cumbernauld (the 60's scottish town where its filmed) look romantic which is not easy to do. Cliff @ on ? GMT #87d-381 Met a couple of mates down one of my locals tonight and was wearing a 'tones Sweatshirt. We got roped in to one of those pub quizzes with 60 questions. When we got to the 'pop' section would you believe it, "which band got to number 16 with Jimmy Jimmy" ?!! The bloke on the table next to me shouted, "Yes! the best band ever"!! I showed him my Sweat and we chatted about the greatest band for a while. So you see,the Undertones live on in Southend-on-Sea !!. Adrian on ? GMT #87d-382 On the subject of cover versions, last year I bought the Nuggets box set, which includes the original version of 'Lets talk about girls'by the Chocolate Watch Band.I recomend this box set,its 50 quid but worth every penny in my opinion. Julius @ on ? GMT #87d-383 Nice Donald you like Gregory's Girl too. There are about a million movies about romance, but Gregory's girl is one of the few where you really "feel the romance". Nice to know where it was shot, a new fact for me! Something else: Today I received (for one of my functions) The Radio Authority Pocket Book, this is the yearbook of the organisation of all commercial radiostations in the UK (IBA). One of the members of the board of the Radio Authority is a Mr Feargal Sharkey, is that our man?? If it is him, he has made a bit of a carreer. If one of the Undertones is reading this: what were the favourite gigs of the band? Which concerts give you the best memories? George on ? GMT #87d-384 A few weeks after the mean fiddler and Fleadh concerts I went to a quiz with a few ex-works colleagues. On the way there I mentioned the concerts I had been to, when one of the quiz team asked 'Who are the Undertones?'. On entering the pub we were met with the sound of teenage kicks blasting from the jukebox. That's the ****** Undertones was my reply. I have subsequently worn one of Cliff's T-Shirts to my running club and was pleasantly surprised to find that most of my fellow running mates were fans of the Undertones. We now have a new topic of conversation on our training nights. Lindsay on ? GMT #87d-385 Was Feargal a fortune-teller - perhaps so according to a quote in Melody Maker (Dec 80) when asked about their long-term plans: "Once the Undertones do pack it in as a group, I would see John continuing to write songs, maybe recording them. Dee would probably join another band because playing guitar is his first love in life. Personally, I'd like to get in Undertones Records - or whatever it'll be called - or West Bank Music on the business side". Don't think much of Mickey's predictions though (Record Mirror,May 81) after Feargal said "There's a good few years in us yet", Mickey replied "I still don't want to be someone like Gary Glitter playing the rounds when I'm over 40, mind you"! Lindsay on ? GMT #87d-386 Donald, don't forget to watch your (second) fave band on the 'I Love 1974' tonight - just be careful at your age not to do yourself an injury with the dance moves though! Donald on ? GMT #87d-387 thanks for the tip Lindsay - youll be pleased to hear that I can still do the Mud shaking hands on hips dance without a zimmer or oxygen but the Skids high kicks are rarely seen nowadays. Sadly never saw the Skids (too young!) but saw the Armoury Show and Big Country several times. Must go , thats right thats right thats neat thats neat phil on ?
