Musings
One other thought is that after Wednesday Week the band then spent almost a year without a single release before returning with the very different sounding singles off Positive Touch. Arguably by then they'd lost the momentum of the first two albums and the world had moved on. Punk was well and trulty dead and New Romantics, Liverpool bands and manufactured pop ruled the roost. George on ? GMT #9ba-6226 Almost agree with you Lee on My Perfect Cousin. Whenever I tell people about the Undertones I always tell them about Teenage Kicks and Get Over You first, then suggest they may have heard Jimmy Jimmy or My Perfect Cousin next. If they still show no signs of recognition I will now throw in the song from the Impulse advert, Here Comes the Summer. Brilliant review Arthur. Jealous as hell that I missed it. For those in Derry it is not as though they have to wait until December again to see the band. They may have another two chances to see them in the next two months. Jackie on ? GMT #455-6227 Lindsay I forgot to ask you, in the photograph you sent what are you all smiling and looking at???? Arthur on ? GMT #a02-6228 I tend to agree with you Lee. In addition, I think that the marvellous body of work which encompasses the Undertones career has been overshadowed by Teenage Kicks. When people mention them - they often say, "They did Teenage Kicks, John Peel's favourite song." So that the band is often defined by that one tune and it's relationship to John Peel. This is limiting to say the least. Don't get me wrong - I think John Peel is brilliant, he brought the band to the world. I think Teenage Kicks is a great song but not in my opinion their best. The same can also be said about My Perfect Cousin. A lot of people see the band within this narrow framework. A bit like the Beatles being viewed as a novelty act because of Yellow Submarine. This reunion can be used to widen the current popular perception of the Undertones as a band but it has to be handled carefully, to avoid the punk nostalgia tripe that the band themselves are naturally wary of. As to why their career finished early - there are a lot of reasons, not the least of which would seem to me to have been a chronic lack of self confidence and belief. Even now, I still don't think they realize how good they are which in a way adds to their charm. As to their heights Jackie - surely you know - they're all giants. Jackie on ? GMT #455-6229 You boys have very serious conversations! I've just ordered my tickets for Dublin, now to figure out how to get two days off work when it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to do so- anyone got any suggestions? Doctor Who on ? GMT #9ba-6230 Jackie go on the sick for two days. That's what most people do. A bad back seems a good excuse. Apologies to Arthur or anyone else really ill. George on ? GMT #9ba-6231 Jackie have you booked your concert tickets or your plane tickets. As for their heights, they may all be giants but I think Paul is taller than Michael. Billy is third (tallest) followed by Damian, then John. Paul is probably 1.86m. John about 1.70m. Jackie on ? GMT #455-6232 I'm thick-whats that in feet and inches? Oh never mind. George I have booked my gig tickets. For some reason I thought it was on the 21st- I'm at work til 3.30 on the 21st so I thought I could make it for the last encore. After I clicked submit I realised it was the day before!! Told you I was thick. However I am so DESPERATE to see them live I could well risk the sack.. Jackie on ? GMT #455-6233 If Paul is taller than Michael he must be related to that other O'neill brother, Shaquille !!!( I hope you boys are impressed- and you thought us girls knew nowt about sport! Actually I meant O'Neal. Jackie on ? GMT #455-6234 I am aiming to be on the first page of the posting tally-cant you tell Sport is not our strong point on ? GMT #9ba-6235 Jackie you will soon learn that sport is not our strong point. Cliff supports WBA, CR Bristol City, George Sunderland, Henry (and Lindsay) Wimbledon). Donald, CMoS and Dave know even less about football. I take it Shaquille must be a tall female basketball player or something. Lee on ? GMT #fb0-6236 But Cliff's a bit quiet on the WBA front even though the season has started. It can only get better I guess ! Lee on ? GMT #fb0-6237 How could I get the order of the singles wrong ? Must go back to school. Paul McLoone (VTU) on ? GMT #8e3-6238 I'm 5"1. It's all done with mirrors. Jackie on ? GMT #455-6239 Don't you mean NBA Lee?
