Does anyone recall the Undertones appearance on `Something Else`, a wonderful Saturday afternnon show that supported a lot of great music of the time, screened in 1978. The Undertones appeared on the same show as Belfast band Rudi. There is a story behind the actual recording of the show - would any of the band care to comment before I put my big size 9 in?

Jackie on 09:53 19th-Jan-02 GMT #455-12085
Yes I saw Something Else, I've mentioned on here it was one of the best things i've ever seen on tv. I'd love to see it again-does anyone have a copy? The interviews of locals on the streets of Derry were almost as good as the bands!!

Arthur on 10:06 19th-Jan-02 GMT #d12-12086
Yes the locals here can steal the show. The best bits of 'Shellshock Rock' are when the people are interviewed on the street sample 'My wee one's into punk but its just a phase'.

Ernie on 12:12 19th-Jan-02 GMT #15d-12087
I remember it was filmed at the BBC studio at the back of the Kings Hall. Rudi were there with all their loyal Belfast fans (!). Among them was a well known skinhead (and thug) who is in the audience. He actually burst into the Undertones` dressing room and threatened them. As Feargal and the lads didn`t need the bullshit from him they pulled the plug on the recording and insisted that they were flown to London and it was actually filmed in another studio, without the bully boys.

Steve on 12:45 19th-Jan-02 GMT #96d-12089
Adrian....It's handbags at dawn then!!!! Yes I've heard Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (The Jesus and Mary Chain after Physchocandy is what they sound like to me.) and the White Stripes (Jonathan Richman/Violent Femmes with the occasional touch of the Velvets.) But you've not heard Clambake...Have you?

CMoS on 17:01 19th-Jan-02 GMT #2ca-12093
Yes there are some new (and old) photos to go up !

Lindsay on 18:06 19th-Jan-02 GMT #f93-12094
6 days of wretched flu. CMoS must have deleted all the messages of concern about my absence! 3rd NY resolution - to put on weight - (yes I did say on), has floundered and I’m now as emaciated as Geri. Energy-level insufficient to switch on computer let alone type anything remotely interesting (not that I ever do much of that anyway!). Been dying to tell you my new boyband theory but still not up to typing that much so will keep you all in suspense a little while longer. (Amazing, you can actually hear things over the internet these days, including a collective sigh of relief!).

Lindsay on 18:09 19th-Jan-02 GMT #f93-12095
Bug passed on by youngest(9) who’s been off school all week. He’s great company and very caring but after a whole week together stuck in front of the tv he’s nearly (I said nearly) driven me nuts (‘why’ being his favourite word). After detailed explanation of intricacies of figure skating techniques (culled from heady Torvill and Dean days) and rules of indoor bowls (well I tried), the next program necessitated a detailed account of the Vietnam War (difficult when first time round David Cassidy was far more important than boring world news and subsequently having never watched a single episode of MASH – or was that about the Korean one?). Feiged sleep thereafter (and cunningly sneaked torch and Bridget Jones book under covers).

Lindsay on 18:12 19th-Jan-02 GMT #f93-12096
Long PS. Got your mail CR - no problem. Will be in touch. Cliff, in the words of shaggy, it wasn’t me (how dare you insinuate…). No I didn’t forget Damian’s birthday but THANK GOD (for me) Hackney was postponed (difficult to pogo with sick-bed attached). Thanks for tapes Jon (lifesaver when ill). Cactus – how’s the guitar going? Did anyone see The Skids on TOTP2 with Stuart in pink jumper? (how COULD my friend have possibly fancied RJ?!!) and Wilke, surely you remember doing the conga in Burger King? Must go lie down again…

George on 19:35 19th-Jan-02 GMT #71e-12097
I watched the Skids on TOTP2 on Wednesday. I remember 20 odd years ago when we tried to dance like Richard Jobson. Looking back I could dance better to Into the Valley than RJ then and after hearing the song on NewYearsEve/Day at the Punk tribute night and watching TOTP2 I still can.

George on 19:40 19th-Jan-02 GMT #71e-12098
I've been catching up on videos released last year. After reading the book (recommended by CR)I watched High Fidelity trying to see if there were any Undertones LPs on the racks in the record store, and have just finished watching American Beauty. I thought I knew most of the plot but the film was different and more depressing than what I expected. I was expecting a comedy.

Vinny on 21:45 19th-Jan-02 GMT #d12-12099
Well, they have literally just been on TG4. Started the show straight from Titles, did TEENAGE KICKS and OH PLEASE(I think?). Looked great, sounded superb. Well as good as you can in a tiny studio with a tiny audience. The Presenter then went on in Irish forever about them but unfortunately I stopped doing Irish in Third Year at school so couldn't translate. Anyway, excellent stuff and I have it taped.

Julius on 22:07 19th-Jan-02 GMT #624-12100
Hope you are feeling better right now, Lindsay. We surely did miss you in our hearts but we only send out messages of concern after 7 days absence, so your 6 days of flu was one day short for a flow of mails..... Wilke: Echo and the Bunnymen did release a very good Best Of-Cd, including all the singles and some great albumtracks like 'Villiers terrace', I bought mine copy just last week for 9 Euro, it is midprice already in Holland!

Julius on 22:22 19th-Jan-02 GMT [rudi78.free.fr/index.htm] #29c-12101
Ernie: Go to the Rudi-website, mentioned here in red, read the history page for their story of the 'Something else' recording. By the way: on the guestbook of the Rudi-site somone from Scotland says he has a copy of Shellshock!!!

Julius on 22:28 19th-Jan-02 GMT #29c-12102
Steve thank you for your tip on Clambake, I just discovered BRMC

Ernie on 23:48 19th-Jan-02 GMT #a1d-12103
Lee, I posted TWO cd compilations today, you should get them Tuesday.

Ernie on 23:56 19th-Jan-02 GMT #de1-12104
According to Brian Young of Rudi, Alwyn Greer a skinhead photographer whose work was featured heavily in `Alternative Ulster` fanzine, burst into the `Tones dressing room and called them a bunch of ****** bastards. There was always great conflict between Belfast bands and those outside the city. Hopefully, the band can respond to this one!

Cliff on 00:18 20th-Jan-02 GMT #34e-12105
