I have an audio tape of the 'Something Else' show but it was taped with the casette sitting in front of the telly (no fancy jack sockets in those days). the quality is atrocious but I remember the show well and there was a lot in the music press about it.Cant blame the skinhead for being an angry young man with a large chip on his shoulder. Cant be easy acting the hard man when you're called 'Alwyn'!Glad youre back Lindsay.

Good to hear about the Undertones on TV.Even if we didn't get the chance to see them here it means they must be together trying out all those new songs. Strange to get an email from Ocean informing me of the postponment of Tuesday's concert on the same day it was due to happen - good job we have this site ! Hope you are soon completely better Lindsay - glad tapes arrived to help get you through and thanks again. Cliff - West Brom are winning as I write this so hope that continues and cheers you a little over the Jeff Astle news. Booking a ticket for Spurs took me an age the other day - probably because Saturday games are so rare these days. I miss Saturday games standing behind the goal. Still I would miss live TV games so can't have it both ways I guess...

Wilke - 2 Bunnymen compilations you can track down. 'Songs to Learn & Sing' came out in 1995 on vinyl (not sure if a CD version has ever been issued) and contained all A & B sides up to that point. I have an autographed copy which I treasure because it has the late Pete de Freitas' (Bunnymen drummer) autograph on it. Also the recent 'Crystal Days' box set which has 4 CD's of A & B sides, choice album tracks, live songs, rarities, and cover versions and comes highly recommended (by me). That 'Something Else' TV show with the Undertones was actually shown early in 1980 and the boys did live versions of 'My Perfect Cousin' and a superior sounding 'There Goes Norman' to the album. I know because, like Lyndsay, I have it on dodgy quality cassette taped from the TV. First single bought 'Metal Guru' by T.Rex, first album 'Top of the Pops - September 1971' with bad covers of Schools Out, etc., and first gig The Undertones & the Moondogs June 1980.

I know Cliff will more fondly remember Jeff Astle for his winning goal in the 68 Cup Final, but my more recent memory was the Finale to Fantasy League Football when he would literally murder whatever song was suggested by Frank Skinner. Wearing fancy dress he was obviously well up for a laugh.

Rick was your first gig at the city hall newcastle in June 1980? Cos if so I was there and it was my first gig too! I've got some great photos of my friend and I standing by the stage door and trying to get into the tour bus !!(at that time a grotty 10 seater hired ford transit, colour not unlike this page) In the end settled for pulling a bit of newspaper from out the back doors. What a souvenir!Though we did get the photos of Mickey and Dee, as anyone who wanted to could meet them in the stalls after the gig. My dad came to pick me up and I remember he got in by saying 'I'm a mate of Feargals'I even recall I was in row H.Though didnt stay there long!

Jackie - yes it was Newcastle City Hall (3rd June 1980) I was in the stalls about half way back and there was so much pogoing going on that the whole row of seats collapsed. Me and some mates came to the gig on a coach from Teesside and I just remember how amazing both bands were and how excited I was at seeing a band I'd loved for over a year. I was 16 at the time and I bought the grey Hypnotised T-Shirt with the lobster and tour dates on. My sister still has it and says it looks like it would only fit a 10 year old. Great memories.

Just heard Black Leather Motorcycle Club on the radio, track called 'Red eye'? Really good, very Jesus and Mary Chain as Steve said earlier. That can only be a great thing as JAMC are one of my alltime favourites. What is the album called?

did not get to see the undertones on tv last night so phone the person who was to tape they forgot to do it but phone a mate he said if i can get a copy he will do four tapes for me so i will see if vinny will let me have his tape ps they only do two songs so if cliff and donald still want let me know see ya ps my other knee is now bandage up as well must be geting old

Looks like I'm not the only one who is ill with some flu bug. Hope your feeling better Lindsay? I'm still coughing like a trooper which is extremely painful on the famous rib injury. Like Lindsay I'm too shattered to read back whats been said or to write much you'll be glad. Jackie, can't seem to get through to you on e-mail. Could you send me again so I can post the photo's.

Maybe flu bugs can spread via websites like some other bugs do. Sorry you're ill too Derek. Wondered where you had got to. Did the Bus picture ever emerge?? I still feel crap so another dull day of daytime tv for me tomorrow. That Mull HS were on C4 Popworld today – not bad but can’t say it seemed the most appropriate medium for airing their music. Does anyone in Ireland know anything about The Kelly Show??? Is it good/crap?? (suspect the latter). I may need to ask a favour involving sending a tape cross the water in Feb.

Talking of flu bugs and seeing TOTP2 reminded me of my first gig (Skids at Sheffield Limit) in March ’79. We’d hired a minibus and it was freezing. Having decided to leave all the coats on the bus, we had a fantastic time and emerged soaked to the skin and covered in the usual, only to discover it was snowing heavily with the bus nowhere in sight. Ended up 10 of us huddled shivering in a doorway for a good half hour. Next day dashed to the local record shop and unbelievably managed to get the only copy of the album ever to be sold in Goole I’m sure. However next day at school started to feel very ill and tearfully called my mum from a phone box to pick me up. Remember playing the album non-stop and it being a real effort to get up to turn it over each time but I was very happy. Pass the same phone box every couple of weeks and never fail to think of Stuart & Co.

Incidentally, I made a pilgrimage to York Pop Club last year (I was outside, unfortunately not inside, one particular night in May that same year) and discovered it was now an Indian restaurant. Fancy people obliviously sitting eating their Kormas and Vindaloos on such hallowed ground!
