Musings

I have just heard the new single that the band are going to release in the summer. It isn't at all bad. Although it is nothing compared to earlier stuff. Just seems to be something missing in the sound. Very polished and not very exciting. Sounds like one of the Moondogs lesser tracks. There is no way it could ever make it into the charts.

Marty Edwards on 08:23 14th-May-02 GMT #0f4-14504
Haven't heard the B side yet.

Marty Edwards on 08:23 14th-May-02 GMT #0f4-14505
Think they would be better off sticking to playing the old stuff if this is the best they can come up with. Don't get me wrong, I love the Undertones but I know a good tune when I hear one and this just isn't. I think they are going to make a big mistake.

hugh on 09:04 14th-May-02 GMT #c72-14518
Vinny, recordings come in boxes now. They've stopped using 78s too.

Marty Edwards on 17:40 14th-May-02 GMT #0f4-14520
Vinny your right it wasn't a finished cut of the song I heard. But it was Please Me and I still think it is well below par and sounds a bit dated too.

Marty Edwards on 17:40 14th-May-02 GMT #0f4-14521
Sorry it was 'Oh Please'

Christine @ on 11:15 14th-May-02 GMT #894-14523
Congratulations Donald - surely watching the Undertones would make a perfect honeymoon!

Christine @ on 11:18 14th-May-02 GMT #894-14524
Jackie: saw REM on South Bank Show (v good)but not sure I agree on the Peter ever being that handsome. Whatever, mad behaviour on planes has obviously taken its toll! I DO agree that there was nothing quite like the Tube. Our trip to City Road was a day to remember wasn't it?

Christine @ on 11:23 14th-May-02 GMT #894-14525
Now I think we should use the positive touch on the release of the new record. As the amount that you need to sell to get a Number One is quite small now, it means that there is a good chance that we could get them a chart hit if we tried. Which opens the door to the classic hits of the past getting more airtime too - so everyone's a winner!

Christine @ on 11:24 14th-May-02 GMT #894-14526
And imagine phoning up to try and get the video shown on cable - bound to be great family entertainment. I know this could prove to be quite expensive but hey it's only money.

Marty Edwards on 17:40 14th-May-02 GMT #0f4-14527
I'll bet £100 that the single will not make the top 40. I am serious. If anyone out there has such faith in the band they why not put up the cash to prove it. We could get a third party to hold the bets.

Marty Edwards on 17:40 14th-May-02 GMT #0f4-14528
It is time to put your money where your mouth is.

doninblack on 11:46 14th-May-02 GMT #bde-14529
Marty, is it going to be an EP? Do you know what other songs are going to be on it? Is it an Irish release only?

Christine @ on 12:04 14th-May-02 GMT #894-14530
Marty - you may well be right and it won't make the charts. But let's face it, that doesn't mean that it won't be worth releasing it. Given the choice of 'Unchained Melody' or a new Undertones EP I know which I would prefer to listen to. And the lack of a top 40 entry doesn't change much - I remember much the same experience when many of the old songs were released - you waited with bated breath to see the new chart and (with a few notable exceptions) nothing much ever happened.

AlexD on 12:18 14th-May-02 GMT #426-14531
Is your glass half empty by any chance Marty? Because you don't like a particular song doesn't mean nobody else will.Buy yourself something nice with your £100 instead.

Christine @ on 12:27 14th-May-02 GMT #894-14532
Get Over You didn't get into the Top 40 and if the Undertones had given up then look how much we would have missed. Let's not build this up into the 'Tones need to be a commercial sucess to prove they are worthwhile. The point of my posting was that it could be fun trying to get the record played and perhaps jog people's memories about some of the classic tracks of the past. And to me having fun and enjoying the whole thing - the gigs, the new releases, etc was a big part of being an Undertones fan.

Marty Edwards on 17:41 14th-May-02 GMT #0f4-14533
While I agree that chart position doesn't equate with a good record - you will find the the band themselves have different ideas. They are pinning their hopes on this record hitting the charts before they make a decision about the future of the band. Bit like the first Teenage Kicks EP release - if that hadn't made an impact then they were for calling it a day. Well the same seems to be true now, they are definitely hoping for a chart success and aren't interested in producing records for a handful of hardcore fans (or 'nerdy stalkers' as one of them recently put it). Trust me I know.

doninblack on 12:54 14th-May-02 GMT #bde-14534
With the risk of repeating myself...Marty, is it going to be an EP? Do you know what other songs are going to be on it? Is it an Irish release only?

Christine @ on 13:46 14th-May-02 GMT #894-14535
OK Marty - I appreciate you know what you're talking about as you've heard it and I haven't. But there is an appetite for new songs - and the reaction when they have been played live must have been positive or no one would be contemplating releasing anything.

Hugh on 15:28 14th-May-02 GMT #64f-14536
Marty, I bet you £100 that you are all-powerful, omnipotent and know everything. I obviously can't lose.

donald on 16:40 14th-May-02 GMT #e46-14539
Marty=Anna boring loser out the loonbin for easter. Went to see Black Rebel MC last night - v good but the support act was unbeleivably good and insane. A one man band from Touson Arizona with a bass drum cymbals and a slide guitar called 'Slide Guitar Ride' playing really fast insane rockabilly/psychobilly blues. Bit like Jon Spencer Blues explosion crossed with the Cramps on speed. To cap it all he was wearing an blue Elvis jumpsuit with a fighter pilot helmet complete with visor. Never seen anything like it -if anyone knows anything about him I'd like get some of his tunes.

Lee on 16:47 14th-May-02 GMT #fb0-14540
The dreaded return of Anna methinks! Let's hope we don't have to switch off for a few days.

Sean on 17:38 14th-May-02 GMT #c41-14541
Marty while I agree with some of what you say about the new material, I don't think there is any need to resort to abuse. I have heard a couple of the new tracks (both live and on tape) and I do have to say that they are not that good. Some of it sounds like something John might have done with Rare while none if it is very catchy. Thats just my opinion for what it is worth. We will have to wait and see however. Marty are you going to any of the southern gigs in the summer - good news about the Nerve Centre.

donald on 18:02 14th-May-02 GMT #e46-14542
Damian said at the recent film showings that the record is only to be released in Ireland so I find it hard to believe that the future of the whole band is dependant on its chart success when it probably wont qualify for UK chart placings.Chart success never seemed that important to them before so why now? I dont think you are who you say you are and never trust someone who says 'trust me'!

wilke @ on 20:43 14th-May-02 GMT #8a9-14543
hi marty whats with all this crap about the new song if you dont like fair enough just let rest of us make our own mind up about it and if itis oh please great its a good song anyway and this crap about betting 100 pounds on it getting into the top 40 it would be great to see it but if it does not im sure the band wont lose any sleep over it .any way puting a bet on is like saying my bands better than yours.ps roll on galway

wilke @ on 20:48 14th-May-02 GMT #8a9-14544
dondal have a great stag night. when ever it is sorry you cant make it over to any of the gigs this summer but hope to see you for the xmas gigs if the wife lets you out for a few days see ya

Cliff on 21:08 14th-May-02 GMT #72a-14545
Are you sure 'Nerdy Stalkers' isn't the name of one of the new songs? Could be a follow up to 'There goes Norman'.

AlexD on 21:32 14th-May-02 GMT #e5c-14546
There's a thought, where's the stag do donald? Bucky on draught? I'm not stalking honest! I know where you can get inflatable sheep wholesale, or are you going for the real thing? Cliff I've missed a few, did you settle on a name for the baby?

wilke @ on 22:05 14th-May-02 GMT #8a9-14547

Sean on 23:30 14th-May-02 GMT #a49-14548
'when it probably wont qualify for UK chart placings' - Donald you prat we do also have a chart system in Ireland you know. You idiot.

George on 00:00 15th-May-02 GMT #fa5-14549
So is the bet by Marty that it makes the top 40 in the UK or Ireland. Out of interest and being serious Sean, what were the Undertones original chart placings in the Irish charts, both single and LP. I know the Guinness Book of Hit singles lists the UK charts. Is their an Irish equivalent? Apologies for my ignorance. Just been to see Ireland stuff my football team tonight. At least it was for a good cause. I've had more physical games of football against my daughters. The only chance of anyone being injured would be if they slipped in the showers afterwards.

George on 00:03 15th-May-02 GMT #fa5-14550
Congratulations Donald. Another man gone to waste. As Cilla once said on Blind Date. A man is not complete until he is married, and then he is finished! Sounded better/funnier when Cilla said it.

AlexD on 00:15 15th-May-02 GMT #92a-14551
I think donin was trying to clear this up.Sean what happened to #14541? If (big if), the band were making a career decision on the showing of their next release then with respect to the Irish chart, I think they would be looking at making a showing in the UK chart. Would you agree?

Cliff on 00:18 15th-May-02 GMT #c74-14552
Johnny lydon is on the James Wale show tomorrow(Wednesday) night (talk sport 1053/1089 am).

Cliff on 00:21 15th-May-02 GMT #c74-14553
Alex, no definate name at the moment but Thomas is favourite.Wilke, Dave Richings is on the verge of recieving a t-shirt so we should get some feed back from the ex-Essex boy.

Cliff on 00:22 15th-May-02 GMT #c74-14554
Regarding that 100 all time greatest songs, no Buddy Holly or T-Rex, whats that about?

AlexD on 04:16 15th-May-02 GMT #397-14576
I just heard the music from 'the Omen' there!! There's a lot to be said for spellcheckers and PRN medication. Did someone not get enough cuddles when they were young? Trust me !!

AlexD on 04:32 15th-May-02 GMT #397-14577
Although to the trained eye, if you look carefully at the postings and admire the clever logic it's obvious, it's the work of a maverick genius, either that or a fucked up prick. I bet you hear new songs everyday. In the words of the bard ' Go and Lie in your pish'

AlexD on 04:38 15th-May-02 GMT #397-14578
I'ts not Feargal is it???
