20 years ago today The Undertones played their last Feargal UK gig at Selhurst Park. Dare I mention that they were below the Thompson Twits on the bill?!?! Cliff on 09:14 9th-Jul-03 GMT #5d7-22403 I remember that day so well.A fellow Undertones and West Brom supporter lived 2 minute walk from Selhurst Park, so as soon as Peter Gabriel appeared in his white suit we headed for the exit but you could clearly hear him from my mates house.I hated that day, it was a terrible way to see the Undertones for(what I thought then)was the last ever time. George on 09:51 9th-Jul-03 GMT #100-22404 I was at Crystal Palace that day. I also left before Peter Gabriel came on, but I had a train to catch. If only we knew then that we only had to wait another 16/17 years for more concerts the day wouldn't have been as sad. CMoS on 10:24 9th-Jul-03 GMT #1ed-22405 John Peel 2003-07-08 22:55. 'I wasn't going to play this again .. but sometimes you just can't stop yourself' ..[THRILL ME] wilke on 10:24 9th-Jul-03 GMT #69c-22406 i think there might be hope for my son [liam] after all he was down loading undertones songs last night time to send in the big guns play him as my of there songs as i can talk soon see ya stote007 on 10:57 9th-Jul-03 GMT #8ae-22407 Cliff, I remember it well. We pissed off before Peter Gabriel as well. The only highlight was a particularly pleasant topless lady spotted watching The Thompson Twins..... Their bass player was a cocaine dealer, by the way. Dave R on 11:04 9th-Jul-03 GMT #43d-22408 I've got a tape and some photo's from Selhurst Park, along with the programme and ticket stub - but I wasn't there!! Rick on 16:24 9th-Jul-03 GMT #2a9-22410 Following the week-ends events, I'm waiting to find out why CmOS is building a lifesize Dalek in his garage, how Henry got back to London with his bike, and why 'Thrill Me' was only available for sale at the gigs on vinyl ? Sample comment : 'I'd like to buy this but haven't got a turntable anymore'. Liam @ on 16:52 9th-Jul-03 GMT [spectredescalier.com] #344-22411 Followed one of the links at the bottom of this page and it took me to http://spectredescalier.com - What is it - downloaded some music from it and it was some of the worst out of tune noise I have yet to hear. What is it? Tell me it isn't anything Undertones related please. The playing wasn't even in tune and the singing (for want of a better word) was completely tuneless. Check it out for yourselves. CMoS who is it. I assumed it was some kind of joke thing? Dave R on 17:11 9th-Jul-03 GMT #f08-22412 Liam - it is CMoS!! Jackie on 19:17 9th-Jul-03 GMT #bbb-22414 open mouth insert foot! julius on 21:16 9th-Jul-03 GMT #6d1-22416 great reading all those reviews, sure I missed something, julius on 21:16 9th-Jul-03 GMT #6d1-22417 spectre descalier have some rather decent songs as well! julius on 21:17 9th-Jul-03 GMT #6d1-22418 wilke poster will be on the way to you in a few days; let me know when you get it julius on 21:19 9th-Jul-03 GMT #6d1-22419 well, Holland treated the Undertones a lot better, their last Feargal-gig was in late june 83, a huge festival in arnhem and they headlined. I believe one of the supports was Kid Creole wilke on 22:05 9th-Jul-03 GMT #69c-22420 thanks julius. vinny you going to bray are you staying up there .if so what time you leaving derry ?ps how were the holidays talk soon see ya Cactus on 22:06 9th-Jul-03 GMT #18b-22421 The last 'real' Undertones gig was the one at the London Lyceum; the three festivals were outside and the band weren't headlining. I didn't go to Selhurst Park; think it had something to do with Peter Gabriel and the cost. It's good to see people here are yet again demonstrating good taste by not having hung around to see him. The day at Punchestown (17-7-83)(last gig) was great but really sad; I was glad I basically had 24 hours of hitching home to reflect on life... Cactus on 22:17 9th-Jul-03 GMT #18b-22422 Been thinking about Cliff's and others observations of the smileyness of Undertones gigs. I can't help thinking that it's partly the whole ridiculousness of them. I mean, lots of 40ish people jumping up and down and generally pushing each other about, whilst shouting at the top of their voices that they want to be Male Models. That has to be worth a smile or two. :-) And the fact that no one seems self-conscious about doing it. And becasue it’s really happening and how great that is. And that for an hour or more all the other crappy things going on in life disappear. Shame you can't buy prescription Undertones. A copy of Thrill Me would be much better for most people than a bottle of prozac. Actually, a few sacks of Undertones CDs could save the NHS quite a lot of money. Malc W on 22:18 9th-Jul-03 GMT #8e1-22423 Twenty bloody years? Now I really feel old. Well this here 15-year-old (well,I was then)remembers it all very well, with Feargals's yellow & white v-neck t-shirt still clear in the addled mind. We too (myself, my bro Mark & mate Al (the names Derek couldn't remember in his weekend review) left early. I remember the gate security trying to explain to us that if we left we wouldn't be allowed back in for Peter G. 'Oh good,' we said 'That suits us, fine. Take care now.' Some years later I returned there to see Charlton vs Liverpool (Ian Rush's Italian homecoming, when John Aldridge upstaged him with four goals!)and the same gateman was still there - stunned. Bloody hippies. N.B. One of these memories may be made up. Cactus on 22:19 9th-Jul-03 GMT #18b-22424 You might be able to tell I had a bad work day today.... Lucky I've got the solution. Cactus on 22:20 9th-Jul-03 GMT #18b-22425 ...Except the festival in Holland where they did headline! (Memo to self: Must read what others write more carefully)! Cactus on 22:21 9th-Jul-03 GMT #18b-22426 I want to know what the Dalek is for too. It's not, well, normal, is it? Malc W on 22:23 9th-Jul-03 GMT #8e1-22427 I agree with Cactus. The Lyceum was the real last one for me, too. Maximum Joy supporting I recall. 'Tones-wise there was little for me to get excited about until two Eleven gigs at the Marquee (a fine band) then those heady early Petrols gigs at small venues like the Pindar of Wakefield and The Enterprise. Halcyon days. Okay, the maudlin old sod is going now. Cactus on 22:32 9th-Jul-03 GMT #18b-22428 Malc W: I saw Eleven at the Marquee twice too; was that the only gigs the band ever played? I rememeber going up to the bar to buy a drink and finding myself standing next to none other that Feargal! Needless to say I managed to stay totally cool about it by pretending I hadn't seen him! Well, what do you say to God? :-) How do you sum up how much you liked the Undertones in one sentence when you have the chance to tell the singer after years of just seeing him on stage? I had no social skills then either... Cactus on 22:33 9th-Jul-03 GMT #18b-22429 Does anyone know if Feargal has ever taken a look at this site? donald on 22:39 9th-Jul-03 GMT #237-22430 Cmos's dalek will come in handy to exterminate Liam. Tip , if you see a dalek ....run. Jackie on 22:49 9th-Jul-03 GMT #bbb-22431 Perhaps CMoS is a Dr Who fan. It does happen you know. And Daleks are scary. The scariest Dr Who episode ever was when the Daleks DID manage to climb the stairs...... Liam on 22:49 9th-Jul-03 GMT [www.theundertones.com] #cb5-22432 Bollocks! I did it again didn't I. I am sorry. I really did have no idea. Thought it was just someone CMoS did a website for or something. Ah well - what do I know anyway! Jackie on 22:50 9th-Jul-03 GMT #bbb-22433 ...tenner to anyone (except CMoS )who can name the episode!!!:-) Jackie on 22:51 9th-Jul-03 GMT #bbb-22434 Lindsay, my copy of Now says Lisa is really a man- what do you think? George on 23:00 9th-Jul-03 GMT #ffe-22435 I've always wanted to go to a fancy dress party dressed as a dalek. And the power to exterminate people, I'm sure I could find a use for that! Cactus on 23:03 9th-Jul-03 GMT #18b-22436 Remembrance of the Daleks Cactus on 23:04 9th-Jul-03 GMT #18b-22437 George: You need to watch that kind of urge! (The dressing up, not the exterminating). Arthur on 23:28 9th-Jul-03 GMT #8ae-22438 I was at the Lyceum gig, a Sunday night and the doors were late opening as the band were soundchecking. I well remember hearing Julie Ocean drifting across the Strand. Also went to Selhurst Park and tried to pick a fight with some idiot with a 'Gabriel is God' poster. I remember being sad but not surprised that they were splitting up; in truth I think that they'd lost something on the last tour, I couldn't tell you what but they've got it back now. As for Eleven, I saw them at the Marquee and also supporting Chris Rea at the Manchester Apollo. I'm sure they'd a song called 'My Metropolis' but to be honest I thought they were just about alright. donald on 23:49 9th-Jul-03 GMT #237-22439 I met Tom Baker once, he came to our school and me and a friend had to show him round. I got his autograph for my cousin who was a huge Dr Who fan. Bet your jealous Cmos. George you dont need to dress like a Dalek, after running a marathon you resemble Davros:) Malc W on 00:25 10th-Jul-03 GMT #98c-22440 The Feargal sighting at the Marquee mentioned by Cactus has gone down in legend with my lot. He was wearing his white suit & shooting stick. Our Alan was in awe & somehow managed to spill a slug of expensive club ale down him as he turned from the bar. The main man smiled as Al apologised, but weakly. The next week or so he was wearing the self-same suit on TOTP with Madness for Listen To Your Father (how about that for a Radio 2 link after Guilfest). Not to be outdone, my bro Mark counters this tale with one of how he mistakenly (honest)peed on Phil Collins'leg in the gents in our village local one night in a similar star-struck double-take manner(Peter Gabriel's Genesis replacement lived nearby). And if Mr Sharkey or even Mr Collins ever read this site please don't send your dry cleaning bill this way. Much obliged. Malc W on 00:35 10th-Jul-03 GMT #98c-22441 I met Tom Baker once in my mate's record shop in Guildford. 'Where can I buy a classical CD in this town?' he bellowed - loud and direct. I was in awe this time. It wasn't long after his memorable Captain Rum role on Blackadder. Luckily, I wasn't armed with beer or anything else for that matter. Anyway, My Metropolis was on Eleven's Peel session wasn't it? I must dig that out. Lead singer David Drumgold was very entertaining. Come to think of it, didn't he have a bit of a Tom Baker type voice? Maybe not. CMoS on 03:33 10th-Jul-03 GMT #a3a-22443 Not a problem Liam, 11-14 are and 19-22 will be purely guitars. The biggest vox improvemnt has been with the acoustic stuff on 23-26, released next year
