One of my best non undertones was The Clash when they played Newcastle Uni. in 1979 or 1980. At the time you had to be a student to attend most concerts at the uni., but The Clash threatened not to play and opened the doors to let the non students in. Probably stopped a riot. I can still remember the first time I saw Depeche Mode play Newcastle Uni. before they made the charts. You could almost singalong to everysong straight away, because they were that catchy and when the first LP came out several months later I could recognise most of the songs they had played. That's what a pop song should be about. Easy to remember, easy to singalong to with either catchy guitars or keyboards and it should want you to play it repeatedly.

Shaved the goatee Wayne, less wind resistance when running. Was it a raw egg or had it been boiled first?

wilke on 12:02 1st-Mar-07 GMT #30e-44134

jackie on 17:40 1st-Mar-07 GMT #578-44138
george i have listened to depeche mode greatest hits on the way home- coincidence or what? I agree on pop songs. New Life is one of the best pop songs ever written

Cliff on 18:57 1st-Mar-07 GMT #6ae-44139
I prefer 'the meaning of love', but they were a bit twee at that point. Then they lost themselves up their own asses around 1984/5 with stuff like 'people are people'.I was on the train once passing through Basildon(mid 80's) and the singer(Martin Gore?)got on and sat opposite me, don't think he recognized me though.

Cliff on 19:16 1st-Mar-07 GMT #6ae-44140
No, the singer was Dave something wasn't it?

Cliff on 19:23 1st-Mar-07 GMT #6ae-44141
I think videos were the start of a decline in the quality of music.Duran Duran were typical of those early days of videos, it was all about the video for them, I thought their sings were very average and are now very dated. They seemed to spend a fortune on their vids, whereas the Undertones spent about £1.75 on 'MPC' and 'Wednesday week' put together.I imagine when they finished playing subbuteo on 'MPC' in the O'Neills bedroom, the producer said 'OK, lets pop out to the garden now and we can still do Wednesday week before it gets dark'.

jackie on 20:03 1st-Mar-07 GMT #578-44142

hawk on 20:18 1st-Mar-07 GMT #e50-44144
This week I've been listening to: Otis Redding/Marvin Gaye/Temptations and The Thrills (1st. album - Great tunes) and of course The 'Tones.(All great tunes !!!)

Lindsay on 20:23 1st-Mar-07 GMT [www.youtube.com/watch] #940-44146
Cliff, Dave Gahan is a God (and God help him if he'd been sat opposite me!). Speak & Spell was one of the CDs I bought last week George - spooky! Persuaded all my uni mates to a gig when New Life hit the charts - bopped til we dropped. Vince left a few weeks after. Fave track Photographic, fave ever DM song Enjoy the Silence - absolute class (see link if it works - you won't see this again). Intend adding more CDs when I can as I loved the Broken Frame album (but not so much that single off it Cliff). Black Celebration was depressing enough to send anyone to the Priory (I must've been depressed cos I loved it!).

Lindsay on 20:28 1st-Mar-07 GMT #940-44147
For me, their lasting success is due to each album release successfully developing on their inimitable style without trying to do something too clever that would alienate fans (and being on a small label allowed this). Why they've never won the Brit Outstanding Contribution after all this time must mean someone on the Brits panel still has a problem with keyboards over a guitar. (or maybe we’re back to that small label thing again).

Wayne on 21:04 1st-Mar-07 GMT [www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/whatson/prog_parse.cgi] #521-44148
New York Doll/ Arthur Kane docu, as mentioned on Mickey's show, on tomm. night at 9 on BBC3. My mum was working with Otis Reading's sister (when we lived in Georgia) when he was killed.

Julius on 21:06 1st-Mar-07 GMT #b57-44149
Depeche Mode, last week I planned onto buying some CD's as the LP's -just as my Undertones LP's had to be replaced after too much playing. But must admit I hadnt played them over the last 10 years or so. Well Depeche mode, I saw them in december 82, great gig, met the band afterwards, shared a few drinks (too many), wow what they could drink. Later I heard about all their drug adictions in the late 80's I felt sorry for them. It was a very sad gig for me as I was supposed to meet a friend, she did not turn up, and the next day I learned she had died in an accident opposite the concerthall. Life never was the same afterwards and so were my memories of Depeche Mode.

Wayne on 21:42 1st-Mar-07 GMT #521-44151
.. Redding...

George on 21:57 1st-Mar-07 GMT #4af-44152
I saw the Moondogs play Great Lumley Community Centre, just outside of Chester-le-Street and Jackie was the only one in the audience older than me:-) Brought a few CDs from work home with me tonight (including Speak and Spell and Get What You Need) so I could play them on my train journey tomorrow to London, but unfortunately left the CD player at work. Stupid or what! I'll be racing in the brand new purpose built indoor stadium at Lee Valley, Enfield over the weekend. Only problem is I have a cold, I feel like sh1te and my running this week has been crap.

Cliff on 22:02 1st-Mar-07 GMT #3ef-44153
Yes I forgot about 'enjoy the silence' thats a good one.

Cliff on 22:04 1st-Mar-07 GMT #3ef-44154
Thats a really sad story Julius.
