Newsletter No. 003. Dear Humdingers -
Thanks for all your letters. I'm sorry if you didn't get a personal reply but when possible I have attempted to answer all your questions. Those of you who wrote letters specifically for one of the band can be assured that they were passed on. I hope you got a reply - if not well they do get a lot of letters but not that much time to reply to them all.
From your numerous ideas for T-shirts - an exclusive Rocking Humdingers T-shirt will be made available in the New Year.
In this issue there is included not only an updated penpal list - a merchandising list and order form but also a Personal File on each member of the band (the most requested item in your letters) AND -. yes - the world aclaimed literary genius of D. O'Neill brings you an exclusive interview with one of the major forces behind the formation and early success of The Undertones --. EUGENE MARTIN.
(Those of you who have only recently joined the club and would like a copy of 'Oor Vinny' which went out with the last newsletter should send in an SAE)
The Undertones may have been out of the news in the UK since the last tour but this is because they have been busy elsewhere -.
During September and October they toured in Austria - France - Belgium - Holland - Germany and Sweden. Whilst in Germany they were featured on the Rockpalast TV Rock show from Essen. They played a sixty minute set to a live audience of eight thousand (their biggest indoor audience to date) and to a live TV audience of 25 million in Austria - Belgium - Holland - France - Germany - Sweden - Norway - Denmark - Italy - Yugoslavia - Rumania - Hungary!!' Predictably the BBC/Old Grey Whistle Test was the only country offered the show who didn't take it! However - the band are currently listening to the live tapes and video of the show for possible release as a live LP and video in the UK - so you may get to see it yet! They also recorded two other TV shows - one in Austria and another in Germany which will be broadcast on German TV on New Years Eve.
On their return from Europe at the end of October - Mickey and Mary were married.
At present - the band are writing songs for the next LP. As far as touring goes there is nothing planned and it is unlikely that there will be any tours until well into the New Year.
I must apologise to all our American and Canadian members who were lead to believe there might be a tour this year. Sorry - but it didn't work out. We will let you know if and when a tour is scheduled.
Another point raised in many of your letters is concerning the old singles and L.P.s These will be re-issued on Ardeck Records some time next year. Meanwhile - beware of dodgy foreign imports or people asking ridiculous prices for old singles!
