Channel 4 excellent series on music 'Top Tens' featured an episode on Punk as its third programme in its second series. It was hosted by Malcolm McLaren and voiced by the Lord himself Ian Dury.

Malcolm Mclaren: In person

You see punk was never about uniforms Mohicans and ripped bin liners - it was about individualism that's for sure and about style and a sense absolutely of complete outrage. And about table football ?

Logo: Number 7

Ian Dury: Over sounds of True Confessions OGWT and band stills

And you thought punk was all mouth wand bondage trousers. Derry's Undertones wore hand me down jumpers - tank tops - parkas and worse crime of all flares. Could they be punk

Feargal Sharkey: over his pix then head spot today

For the Undertones it was never about sticking a safety pin through you nose

John O'Neill: over his pix then head shot today

In terms of attitude we probably were pretty punk

Billy Doherty: over his pix then head shot today

So there were no fashions shops in Derry. I mean you just went in to this shop and what ever was there you bought

Michael Bradley: over his pix then head shot today

You were whatever your mother bought you - you would sort of say I'll have a pair of parallels and she'd say OK that's grand or a pair of - I like these shoes mummy is that all right - grand good sensible shoes and so they were

Ian Dury: Over True Confessions OGWT Jun 1978

This motley collection of brothers and friends though they had no future in the music industry. But before splitting up they decided to release one EP on Belfast label Good Vibrations

Feargal Sharkey: Vocals

We'd gone through the whole demo thing - sent it off to record companies - had been rejected and it was 2 years of none stop graft and trying to fight against everybody and everything all the thing

Tony Blackburn: TOTP

At number 38 first time in 'Undertones' and Teenage kicks

Ian Dury: Over Teenage kicks on TOTP

Thankfully the boys had an influential fan - Radio 1 DJ John Peel played the son to death

Damian O'Neill: Guitar

The phone would just be ringing constantly - Oh its Polydor today. You know it was incredible for us so young we didn't have a manger - whoo amazing - what do we do what do we say to these people ?

They asked Seymour Stein of Sire records asked for 100 grand

Billy Doherty: Drums mimicking phone conversation

"Hey you guys are crazy there's no way your getting a hundred thousand pounds".

"Seymour we cant do it for what your offering - what's your best deal" and Seymour says "36 thousand" and I panicked and said "Right OK 36 thousand were in" and that was the deal - that how we signed

Feargal Sharkey: Over TOTP (No 31 Oct 1978) then close up

The original chorus was "I want to hold it - hold it tight - get Teenage Kicks right through the night". It was about a male catholic boy in Ireland wanking cos he couldn't get off with anybody

Michael Bradley: Bass

You lean towards the records that you like and the Ramones weren't writing about the Northern Ireland troubles so we decided well I don't think we will either

Feargal Sharkey: Over Jimmy Jimmy OGWT

John in particular was particularly skilled at and particularly good at - was just in a very honest and straight forward way reflecting puberty - adolescence

Damian O'Neill: Over Jimmy Jimmy OGWT (no 16 Apr 1979)

So we got a lot of spotty boys - hardly any girls - we were mainly a boys band for some reason

John O'Neill: Guitar

Because we weren't taken seriously enough at times I felt that kind of - was playing into that little band that could write these novelty type songs

Michael Bradley: over My Perfect cousin video (No 9 Apr 1980)

But I think a lot of people can identify with it - you know. I was compared with cousins. I had cousins that were good at cleaning the house - who always helped their mothers.

We loved Subbuteo you know. We got it for Christmas and we had all the teams and so on and we did play it. It wasn't exactly Shamus Heany but it worked.

John O'Neill: Its going to happen (No 18 Mar 1981)

We couldn't keep playing Ramones type songs all the time and I was getting fed up with it. I was trying to write songs to get away from that

Ian Dury

The teenagers grew up. The albums 'Positive Touch' and 'The Sin Of Pride' showed musical maturity but maybe they should have worn make up.

Billy Doherty

You know then all of a sudden you find bands like Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran on the radio

Damian O'Neill

Glossed up - kind of you know make-up pretty boys - and we weren't pretty boys.

When Feargal announced he wanted to leave I remember thinking "maybe its just as well - you know we've had our day"

Michael Bradley

He left shortly after 'Sin of Pride' came out which didn't even trouble the Top 75. And certainly none of the singles got near the Top 75. So he realised that he would do better on his own and of course he was right

Ian Dury: Over 'Good Heart' on TOTP No 1 Nov 1985

Indeed he had a bigger hit than he ever had with the Undertones and for a time became an unlikely heart throb.

Feargal

It was the one thing that I would like to think I was never under any illusion that I was God's pngt to the female genre

Ian Dury: over Feargal Modelling and Male Model

After his brief flirtation with pop stardom and haute couteau Feargal now works behind the scenes scouting dance music talent

Feargal Sharkey

For me it was not an ambition to be 45 and getting up on stage and singing "A Good Heart" followed by the 99 remix of "Teenage Kicks" - It was never something I wanted to do

Ian Dury: over That Petrol Emotion - Big decision Video No 43 Aug 87

The O'Neill brother went on to form 'That Petrol Emotion'. Although critically acclaimed they never made the Top 40

Ian Dury: over Teenage Kicks in concert 1999

Sharkey has refused to rejoin the Undertones who still get together for one off gigs with new boy Paul McLoone on vocals

John O'Neill

Billy and myself in particular would like to do is get back - recording writing songs full time again. So if there's a way of finically sustaining that by playing some dates and I'm more than happy to do that
